Who is he?

Coraline’s boss in the mountains

You barely see him, and he sets everything off. Because of him, the police knock on the door of the drak-car, the Viking feels humiliated, and the whole winter goes off the rails.

A real wheeler-dealer: he makes the seasonal staff work unpaid overtime, getting round the law. Then he fires Coraline, makes out she resigned and fakes her leave dates to get off scot-free: unfair dismissal in disguise.

What he doesHe runs a hotel in the mountains. Well, he will: the building works aren’t finished.
His methodHe commandeers all the seasonal staff to clean up the building site.
What he forgetsTo ask the landowner’s permission. Hence the police.
Where he comes fromHe’s an outsider in the village, and the village makes sure he knows it.

What makes him memorable

“For a month, all the seasonal staff have been roped in to finish the work on the hotel, racking up unpaid overtime.” (ch. 13)

“Unpaid overtime, late wages, irregular hours, cleaning up building sites, working on my days off: it's taking the mickey.” (ch. 15)

“I hang on until payday, like every seasonal worker. The boss knows it and plays on it.” (ch. 15)

“The boss — I haven't got a solution! Bye! And he fires me! Worse, I find out later he made out I'd resigned! The rat!” (ch. 16)

“Unfair dismissal in disguise. The boss fired me over the phone and passed his decision off as mine, then the very next day he faked my leave dates to accuse me of not turning up for work. He used the law to get round the law. Classic. A real crook.” (ch. 45)
