Protecting the creations

The full framework — what is protected, what is offered, what requires permission, and all the special cases — is set out on the page Rights of use and exploitation.

What belongs to the author, Karine Baridon
Three things are protected here, and they are all the exclusive property of Karine Baridon: the novel The Hammock and the Hummingbirds and its world (story, characters, places, invented words, illustrations, map, songs); the website and all its content (texts, images, guides, games, dictionary); and the concept of the website itself — the way the work is presented, opened up and put into the reader’s hands. All three are protected by copyright and have been registered as described below.

What you can do with them comes down to three cases.

1. Creating from the work: permitted in advance, nothing to ask.
Writing a chapter, inventing a sequel, drawing the characters, composing, filming, acting, teaching, and publishing the result. This permission applies as long as no financial transaction is involved, and provided that the novel The Hammock and the Hummingbirds and its author are credited.

2. Talking about it, quoting it, sharing it: permitted.
Quoting extracts, showing an illustration or the map, sharing a chapter, writing a review, an article, a video, a lesson: this is encouraged, provided you credit the novel and its author and link back to the website.
What is not permitted is publishing the work in its author’s place: putting it back online or printing it elsewhere as if you were the source, distributing it under another name, or circulating parts detached from the book. This requires the author’s prior written consent, even with no money involved.

3. Selling: written agreement and payment.
Selling, publishing, distributing for payment, adapting or exploiting in any form whatsoever the novel, its world or a creation born from it requires, in addition to written agreement, a payment due to the author under copyright: a sum or a percentage of the revenue or profits, depending on what is sold. The terms are set by contract before any exploitation.
This covers in particular adapting the novel into a film, series, documentary, play, show or game, republishing it, translating it, merchandise; and reusing the concept, structure or wording of this website for commercial exploitation.

The novel, the website and all its content are offered to read. They remain the property of their author, who keeps all exploitation rights. This is not a refusal: permission can be granted. It is then set out in a written contract, in line with intellectual property law, which defines its scope, duration and payment. The same rule is written in the creators’ charter.

What belongs to the creators
Creations shared by members of the community remain the property of their authors, always and with no time limit. Their terms of publication and use are those of the creators’ charter, accepted when they are sent.

Creators’ charter

What is registered

The novel The Hammock and the Hummingbirds is protected by an e-Soleau envelope filed with the INPI (the French intellectual property office), valid until 2046, and it has been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office since 21 August 2026. The concept and the website — the way of entering the reading through several doors, of making the work accessible through several senses, of offering the whole book, of turning it into raw material for creating, and of bringing the creations together in a shared gallery — were registered with the INPI on 5 September 2026, in an e-Soleau envelope with the files kept by the Institute. This filing dates the state of the concept and the website, and serves as proof of prior art.
